Maguire's handball goal stands because Greaves touched it last

Sunday, 30 August 2026 · 2026-27 · 56'

What happened

At 1-1, Harry Maguire charged down a Chuba Akpom clearance with his arms and shot. The ball went in off Jacob Greaves' ankle. Because Maguire was not the immediate scorer, his accidental handball could not be punished, so the goal stood. It was correct under the Laws but widely criticised. The KMI panel backed the call 4-1: Maguire's arms were within his bodyline, so the contact was accidental, and he was not the goalscorer.

Reaction

  • Maguire's arms are within his bodyline meaning that the contact with his right arm was accidental and not a punishable handball offence given that Maguire was not the goalscorer.
